Membership brings people together through mutual responsibility, democratic participation and compassionate support. Every member contributes just £10 following an eligible death.

The Society is not registering members or taking payments yet. This page sets out the terms that will apply when it does.

Who Can Become a Member?

Eligibility

  • A Muslim adult aged 18 or over.
  • A person of Mauritian heritage or descent.
  • A spouse or civil partner of a person of Mauritian heritage or descent.
  • A person who supports the Society's purpose, values, registered rules and policies.

No fixed monthly subscription. £10 following each eligible death.

Membership also carries one nominal £1 non-withdrawable share, which is what gives each member their vote. It is not a further charge. How the Society is owned.

Registering Your Children

Registered Dependent Children Under 18 Are Covered

  • The child must be under 18.
  • The child must be linked to an active parent or legal guardian.
  • Registration must take place before an eligible death.
  • No separate joining fee applies.
  • The child does not have voting rights.
  • At 18, the young person must apply for individual membership to remain covered.

When Cover Begins

As soon as you are approved and your initial payment is received. There is no waiting period before you can contribute towards the fund, or be supported by it.

From that point, staying covered means keeping your side of the arrangement:

  • Remain registered and eligible
  • Maintain the required advance balance
  • Keep your personal, dependant and next-of-kin details accurate
  • Respond to contribution requests on time
  • Follow the registered rules and policies

Your Membership Rights

  • One vote in Society decisions.
  • Participation in general meetings.
  • Eligibility to stand for the Board when qualified.
  • A copy of the registered rules.
  • Access to appropriate governance and financial information.
  • The right to raise concerns, complain and appeal.

Your Membership Responsibilities

  • Pay required contributions promptly.
  • Maintain two £10 advance contributions.
  • Provide accurate information.
  • Update contact, dependant and next-of-kin details.
  • Participate responsibly and respect confidentiality.
  • Follow the rules and uphold the Society's Islamic and co-operative values.

    Active Membership

    Only active members are included when the funeral-assistance pool is calculated. To stay active you need to remain eligible and registered, pay all required contributions, and remain unsuspended and compliant with the Society's rules.

    Missed Contributions and Rejoining

    A member who does not replenish a required £10 contribution may have their eligibility suspended. Failure to contribute following three successive eligible deaths leads to membership being terminated, after written notice and a reasonable opportunity to remedy the default.

    A member whose membership has been terminated on this basis can rejoin. To do so they pay the initial joining fees again, the £30 registration and administration fee and the £20 advance contribution, together with the three missed £10 contributions that led to the termination.

    If you are experiencing genuine financial difficulty, please contact the Society promptly, before contributions are missed.

    Resigning from Membership

    Give written notice to the Secretary. The registration and administration fee is non-refundable. Unused advance contributions may normally be refunded after deducting any sums already due or allocated, or a former member may instead choose to donate the remaining balance to the Society.

Not Open Yet

The Society Is Not Registering Members at This Stage

Registration as a co-operative society has been applied for and is not yet complete. Until it is, the Society is not registering members and is not accepting any payments or contributions. Please do not send money to anyone on the Society's behalf.

The directors will announce it here as soon as the Society is ready to take applications. Nothing is lost by waiting: there is no queue and no qualifying period, so cover will begin as soon as an application is approved and the initial payment is received.
