Your Information, Protected

Membership, dependant and bereavement information is sensitive. The Society collects only information needed for lawful administration, protects it appropriately and restricts access to authorised persons.

Who we are

Mauritian Muslim Funeral Fund and Bereavement Society Limited is a members' mutual society and the data controller for the personal information described in this notice. Registered office: 4 Empress Avenue, Chingford, Waltham Forest, London, E4 8SR. Registration as a co-operative society applied for; number pending.

Information we collect

  • Membership application details, including name, date of birth, contact details and address.
  • Next-of-kin details that you provide.
  • Dependent-child registration details.
  • Contribution and payment records.
  • Bereavement notifications and supporting documents needed to verify a claim.
  • Correspondence with the Society.

How we use your information

  • To administer membership, contributions and the funeral-assistance scheme.
  • To verify eligibility and assess claims fairly, and to prevent fraud.
  • To communicate with you about your membership and any bereavement matter.
  • To meet our legal, accounting and regulatory obligations.
  • To support democratic participation, such as general meetings and elections.

Lawful bases

We rely on the performance of our membership agreement with you, our legitimate interests as a mutual society, your consent where appropriate, and compliance with legal obligations. Where we handle special-category information, we do so under the conditions permitted by data-protection law.

Sharing your information

We restrict access to authorised officers and only share information where necessary, for example with an approved funeral director, cemetery or burial provider to arrange a funeral, with our professional advisers, or where required by law. We do not sell your information.

Keeping your information secure

We apply appropriate organisational and technical measures to protect your information and limit access to those who need it to carry out their role.

How long we keep it

We keep membership and financial records for as long as necessary to administer the Society and to meet our legal and regulatory obligations, after which they are securely deleted or anonymised. Detailed retention periods are set out in our records-retention policy.

Your rights

You have the right to access your information, to ask us to correct or delete it, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to data portability where applicable. To exercise any right, please contact us using the details below.
